The Dark Ages

Shedding Light on the Dark Ages

In Britain, the period traditionally known as the "Dark Ages" generally spans from the end of Roman rule around 410 AD to the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD.

This era is also referred to as the Early Medieval Period or Anglo-Saxon Period. The term "Dark Ages" is less commonly used by historians today because it implies a lack of progress or knowledge, when in fact, significant cultural, political, and social developments occurred during this time, including the formation of English identity and language, the spread of Christianity, and the rise of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

The earliest part of this period, from the 5th to early 6th centuries, is sometimes called the "Darkest of the Dark Ages" due to the scarcity of written records
